Should more Ordinary people get on the Honours list than Celebs?

Just been reading through the posts this morning and came across a reply by Covrich I think it was on one of Chippy's re the storm and he said he had been out in this refereeing 3 matches for kids, surely these are the type of people who give their time and turn out week in week out to gives kids/people the opportunity to play sports etc and not the adoration of celebs who many do good work but not to the level of people like this. Whats your thoughts?

It's all nonesense anyway. I can't ever imagine addressing anyone as Sir Whatever, or your Royal Highness come to that. A few years ago the band I was in was sent to Oman with the British Council and we were drilled mercilessly on how to address some local big-wig (I think it was `your excellency') and when the time came all he got out of any of us was `er, hello'.

There are thousands of volunteers around the UK who give up their time to coach youngsters at sports clubs, help the underpriviledged or save lives (e.g. the RNLI).

I probably shouldn't pick on one person, but Nadiya Hussain has just become an MBE for winning a baking competition.

Yes plenty of people it is marvelous how many and when you try and think it is hard to name them, the mountain rescue being one that came to mind along with many others

It annoys me that people espec celebs are given awards/accolades for doing their jobs and getting paid very well for the privilege. Ps there are some celebs who do deserve their awards but far and few

The other side of the coin is that some people deserve our respect for what they have achieved. In these cases I tend to address them as "Mister .... ".

This form of address has the advantage that, by changing the intonation of one's voice, the same "Mister ... " can become an insult or even a threat!

I think there are a lot of 'normal' people that do get the awards, but because they are not already a celebrity they don't make the 6 o'clock News for it (and would probably not want it if it was offered to them). I agree though that it's these unsung heroes that deserve our gratitude.. The whole celebrity thing does my head in, who cares if someone, who no normal person has ever heard of, blew their nose? It's not front page stuff.
