Shipyard ipa

I recently tried this in a local pub, & really enjoyed it. I believe it's an American ipa, very happy. I would love to make a beer that tasted similar. Any ideas on a kit that is similar?

I believe Shipyard was set up by (or at least in collaboration with) Peter Austin, the founder of Ringwood Brewery in Dorset. P. A. has passed on, but one of Shipyard's co-founders in Alan Pugsley, who claims to have the only authentic Ringwood yeast (combination) outside of Ringwood. You might be able to contact him and get some pointers on a recipe.

Which Shipyard IPA? There are two. One is from the US, the other is brewed in the UK.

For me, they are very different in taste. I recently tried to make a clone version of the US version, using some rather sketchy info as the basis of the recipe. It turned out drinkable but nothing to get excited about. Actually turned out to be a bit of a chore getting through them. I made a St Austel Tribute clone at the same time and, for me, there wasn't a massive difference in the two.

Shipyard are brewed in the UK by Marstons, probably at the Ringwood brewery.

You could always contact someone at the Ringwood or Burton breweries and ask them about a Shipyard clone. The worst you will get is a 'thanks for asking but no'
The Burton brewery used to claim an association with a homebrew club so you never know.

Interesting. I had mine in the Porterhouse in Westbourne and it poured and drank like a nitrokeg, but very nice nevertheless. Probably brewed by Marston's then, as they took over Ringwood some years ago. Apparently Shipyard in the US brew Ringwood's Old Thumper under licence from Ringwood (Marstons).

Thanks for your replies, can anyone recommend a kit that is as close to Shipyard or another nice strong very hoppy beer?

Youngs do a good IPA kit but be warned, you will need to wait 3 months for it to fully mature and then it's recommended that you consume within 1 month (less of an issue, I guess).
