shelf life of grain

Anyone know how long grains keep for. We have had some a year in a black bag in a cupboard in the dark would they be still ok to use. We made a small batch of brown ale a while ago and bottled it. Tasted it last week it was awful a burnt saccharin black treacly taste we put it down to the black and choc malt being out of date

I tend to try and use up my base Malts within a few months, I think 6 months at most, but I am still using some Balck Malt that is well over a year old.

I think as long as it's kept dry and reasonabley airtight it should be fine for quite a long while.
