What does settling mean and is it essential?

I am advised on the instructions of my kit to allow 7 days for the cider to settle at the end of fermentation, however, as a student i need it quick and dont really care about the taste as long as it will get us all muntered.

I have other batches aimed at quality, its not all about making quick (nasty) alcohol.

It means give it a little time for the dead yeast and other **** to settle on the bottom of the fermenter and form a sediment.

Bottle and drink too soon and it will certainly get you muntered but you might get headaches and I would suggest you check on your stocks of bog roll.

I too my be looking to quickly get a small batch ready at short notice. Would filtering the wine make a difference and produce a drinkable wine faster?

Filtering is not for clear cloudy wine but for adding that nice sheen to a clear wine. If you put a cloudy wine through your filter it will just block it up.
