I currently own a very tastefully modified 1996 Rover Mini, but my weekly journeys to Portsmouth from Devon are taking it's toll on me and I need something "sensible".

Are there any car savvy people who could reccomend me a car? My girlfriend drives a 1996 Polo which is great and very reliable, so that's one option. I need it to be reliable, comfortable and if possible not too "boring"!

Cheers! CJ.

I think this one could be picked up for £1000 (a week - forever)

ish...

Honda are reliable and comfy. You should be able to pick up a civic for that price 1.6, maybe 80,000 miles.

We've just bought a Pug 206 as a family runabout / first car for 18yo son.
51 plate, 1.4L, £1.4k

I took it today to have my mechanic throw on a new cambelt and give it a thorough check over (no faults found) and it really is a very nice little motor.

That sounds very lah-de-dah, “my mechanic”, but I know one of that extremely rare species, a reliable, honest and trustworthy mechanic who uses his common sense and doesn't rip me off, so he gets all of our business.

Anything VW gets my vote :thumb: I`ve driven different golfs for around 8years without any probs (apart from a gearbox blowing up at 80mph going up telegraph hill  ) Wasn`t too funny at the time though..........

Yep smods right ,go for an astra ,mines 15 years old and still going ,dirt cheap, reriable ,cheap parts.

Kids make me drop them off round the corner tho.

Thanks guys, you've pretty much listed the ones I've had a look at recently, so good to know I'm on the right track.

I hadn't considred the Avensis or Astra, but there's a few about in quite good condition with FSH for that price, so I reckon a bargain could be had :thumb: (still rather have a VW though!)

Rick, Telegraph's a car killer, lol! I don't think I've made it up there at any more that 60mph, with a fair run up. Apart from in the Mini, lol

I def second (or is it third now?) the VW options :)

you could always grab one of these:

In the states you SOMETIMES see Golfs like this, but they're SUPER rare and highly sought after in the VW scene :)

I'd also go for a 406 hdi, father in-law works one as a taxi on 02 plate, same engine with 400,000 miles on't clock. :thumb:
Had new gear box at 200,000

I highly recommend a focus handle really well fairly cheap to buy i wish i still had mine dont go for a scenic their ****

I've had a Saab 9-3 for the last 2 years, it cost me £950 to buy and very little since. It's nice and solid, a little different, pokey, and drinks petrol.
I like it.

are you selling the mini?

I am indeed! Cheers for the replies folks, much appreciated! Spending just £1000 I just want to avoid buying a beater!!

"are you selling the mini?" - as in not just are you selling it, but would you be interested in selling it to someone on the HBF - ie ME!? - I'm interested, which is why I asked (just in case you were keeping it, or using it as part exchange)

Ah, OK! I'm definitely selling it and I'd be glad to email you all the details. Pop your email addy on a PM if you like and I'll give you the run down ;)
