Don't laugh (well not too much), but I can phukup too

I make up a strong sulphite stock solution with 2.5 tsps of metabisulphite to 250ml of water in an old finings bottle, then use 10ml (being one tenth of a teaspoonful) in place of one campden tablet.

On my shelf I've got various pots of yeast, nutrient, pectolase etc. but they are all in standard sized pots. The only thing which is in a large tub is sodium metabisulphite.

Yesterday morning I was out of stock solution so I mixed a new one. I then squirted 20ml of that solution into a carboy and filtered 15 litres of finished Wurzel's Orange.

Something nagged in the back of my mind that my metabisulphite doesn't have a mostly black label. :wha:

Metabisulphite isn't the only thing that comes in a large tub, Steri-Cleen does too!

Steri-Cleen
<5% Potassium Silicate
<5% Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate
15-30% Sodium Carbonate

I have a mere two-tenths of a teaspoonful of that in 15 litres of wine, is there any chance that I can get away with it?

Assuming 5g per tsp, you have 1g of Steri-cleen in 15L of wine.

0.3g Sodium Carbonate in 15L or (0.3/15)*1000 mg/l = 20mg/l

0.05g Potassium Silicate/ Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate = (0.05/15)*1000 mg/l = 3.33mg/l

None of those levels look toxic to me, having had a quick look at the data sheets. What it will taste like, well I leave that to your good self to find out.

I'd still limit my consumption to a couple of bottles a week though, just to be sure.

I once took a very hefty pull out of my 0.004N Iodine bottle thinking it was cider and am still here to tell the tale.
I just mention this to show that you've not cornerd the market in damnfoolery!

I realise this is an old thread but would appreciate a bit of help...

I have just lovingly de-stoned 4lbs of damsons, added 5 pints of cold water and what i assumed were two campden tablets. On closer inspection they are "new improved formula" and contain 500mg Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate. It does say on the packet that you should make up fresh solution every 24hrs.

If i leave the mash for a couple of days before adding the yeast, and the yeast takes hold can I assume that it wont kill me?

Ok, false alarm. After I posted the reply I googled the compound and found that it is used in water purification tablets. So provided it tastes OK it should be safe.

I realise that one fifth would have been more correct but as I was talking in tenths, two tenths seemed more appropriate at the time.

Anyway, I got away with the damnfoolery, as I would expect philmy glass has.
