Ive got my brewbuddy starter kit, waiting for bottles and airlock, capps and capper etc to arrive before i even start the brew. Question is , do you need a proper sample jar for the hydrometer readings, or would a glass or something do? Silly question i suspect but im just not sure of the answer. :thumb:

a friend of mine uses a tall single flower vase from Ikea. anything will di as long as it allows the hydrometer to float without touching sides or bottom and is see through.
Of course using a big vase or jug is recommended

You just need something deep enough that the hydrometer can float freely so doesn't have to be a trial jar. somethinf clear will help. Obviously the wider that vessel is the more beer you will use.

You can just put your hydrometer in the fv but it is not as easy to read and if it is not completely sterile you run the risk of infecting your entire brew so I would advise against that.

Edit: PD beat me to it.

I also use the Ikea bud vases together with a disinfected turkey baster for drawing samples.

But as others have said, you can use anything in which the hydrometer will float freely.

Whilst acknowledging the potential risk already mentioned, my last couple of brews I've just thoroughly steralised my hydrometer and dropped it in the FV.
