We are off on Wednesday to Salzburg for the week

As we spent the last 2 years on "sport" related holidays: drinking in Antigua for the Stanford 20 - 20 and then drinking in cape town for the cock up known as the Football world cup it was her turn to choose.

So - as her favourite film is the Sound of Music we are of to Austria

Can anyone recommend good bars or restaurants out here for me, as I might need to numb myself from the onslaught of hits from Rogers & Hammerstein

Thanks in advance

My only advice would be get to watch better films, I'm sure there must have been some filmed in Burton on trent

Actually Salzburg is a very attractive city, with wonderful architecture, The 'Sound Of Music Tour' (Cathedral and Castle) is OK if a bit twee. . . . We found it better to do the bits we wanted on our own

Avoid the pavement cafes in the main square . . . you will not believe how much you would be charged for coffee and cake    Not one of my favourite things

There used to be a brewery in the castle  and I am fairly sure that there is still a couple of wonderful breweries in the town. And Not to forget Augustiner

My tip how to avoid a typical tourist behavior:

Don’t go there and wait for a waiter to guide you to one of the tables! Take your beer by yourself! That’s how they do it there:

First go to one of the beer counters (there is one inside the Brewery and one outside under the main stairway to the Brewery. If you want to sit in the beer garden choose this one). Take a mug / pitcher from the shelf and clean it with water from the fountain.

Then go to the cashier and pay for your beer in advance ( 1/2 or 1 litre). 1/2 litre costs 2,80 EUR. You’ll get a receipt. With this you go to the counter where it is drawn fresh from wooden barrels.

Then, with a happy smile on your face and a delicious beer in your hand, go and find a table. Don’t hesitate to ask to sit on a table with Austrians. they are very happy here to see how much thier very best beer is appreciated by strangers (-:
