About to do a sg on my two week fermenting Young's A.A.A. (1.070)
But I'm thinking of giving it a gentle stir if the reading looks pants.
I've read on another forum this is wise for big beers.
Before I do though I'd like to hear of anyone else would do the same or just sway the fv instead.
And if I do stir, is it from the trub or above?

Cheers

i just give mine a couple of kicks every few days:thumb:

I'm sure I've read before that it's a good idea to aerate big beers again after a few days fermenting, can't remember where tho.

I've heard of doing a second aeration after 6 to 12 hours for really big beers, but not after a few days.

It shouldn't do any harm as long as you don't splash it, but it shouldn't be necessary either as long as the pitching rate is OK and the yeast can handle the abv and isn't super top croppy (like Wyeast American Ale II) or flocculant (WLP002). For the latter I could see how a stir would be better than rocking the fv for dispersing the yeast. I don't think you would need to though.

I think in that yeast book it says what IainM says that a secondary aeration after 6-12 hours after pitching.

Out of curotity did you mod this kit?? It was the last kit I ever did and I did it ages ago but I dont remember the AAA being 1070.

No mate. I posted a thread on this beer asking others why I would get this reading with the only difference of filling it up to 22litres instead of 23. Hydro working ok too. Baffling

Edit. Ul notice others got high og,s too.
The conclusion was Young's beers were more potent in abv than what they stated.
I really mixed the wort well that's all I know.
