Hi all,

Odd question perhaps but does anyone know anything about these?

We are going to get some solar panels soon but this being the UK it won't be enough to power our home throughout the winter and I was looking into roof mounted wind turbines, about the 1kw range. I've read the rules and regs and it seems we would be ok getting one and we definitely live in a windy enough area but I can't seem to find much info from people who have them. What I can find is quite mixed, ranging from good to bad (with noise and vibrations being a particular problem). I also can't seem to find any companies that specialise in them, perhaps that means they just aren't that popular (which seems a shame)?

We are lucky enough to have a paddock and we could at a push put one in there but they are a lot more expensive and this would be to supplement the solar panels rather than be the main power source.

No direct experience but my understanding is that you don't want one of any size on your roof because of the noise and vibration, unless you have no other option.

I have a friend who's been a real early-adopter of this kind of stuff and is now a net exporter through a combination of photovolatic, a wind turbine at the far end of a field away from the house, and a wood-chip burner - but it's not been a particularly easy journey, the first-generation stuff was pretty temperamental all-round, especially the woodchips, but with some upgrades it now works pretty well.

I have a decent sized garden and its something I have toyed with off and on over the years. If you come up with a solution let us know!

I've looked at wind power, I do have solar PV / solar hot water plus storage batteries and looked to support this with some wind power.

When I last looked the bang for buck ratio was poor.
All the suppliers seemed to exaggerate the power output and to get anywhere near a decent supply they needed to be installed unobstructed in all directions on top of a hill type of scenario.
Do your research, including how they deal with storm conditions. You don't want blades embedding in your fermenter 🤓

YouTube used to have a hardy subset of reviewers, worth a look once you start to narrow things down.

Navition used to have a good forum until they shut down. May pay you to track down where the users have migrated to. 👍
