Yes that's right, if you get an extension on a reel like a garden hose, then unroll it fully.

Also watch out as many extensions are rated to 10 amps only, while you'd get away with this for a while it would be likely to get hot, maybe melt, set fire to your house etc!

So get a 13 amp one!

Excellent thank you. If it's not long enough I'll buy an appropriate cable then. I've seen ones not on a reel that may be better for what I want
 
Even DIY extension leads or reels are only rated at 10 Amps fully unreeled. But if you buy a reel rated at 13A you will be ok. Just check the spec carefully. My 13A reel has to be unwound completely or it is defeated.

My cheapo extension had four sockets but only handles 10A!
 
Meant to write that the extension reel has to be unwound or it is de-rated.
