Hi
Anyone else think making these delicious home brews might be the road to becoming a alcoholic. I simply cannot resist sampling what I brew every single day. What's anyone else's veiw?

You have to be to finish 40 bottles of ipa before the hops fade!

Seriously though I have 3 - 3.5 days off the booze a week whilst there is temptation with all that beer down the shed al that's happened is I buy far far less from the shops now!

Depends.

Little and not too often is the key.

My brother has all but killed himself with alcohol. I had no idea that he had a problem. I knew he liked a drink, but I thought it was in the same way I do, a couple of pints now and again..

I see no harm in a few pints now and again but drinking to excess every single day is a huge problem.

Couple of days off a week is important for giving your liver a break. But yeah, when I have a lot of beer in the cupboard I'll have a bottle most nights with dinner, or split one with the wife if it's a stronger brew.

I drink far too much every time I'm off work. I work on the rail so can only drink on days off

I only drink Friday saturday and maybe a couple on Sunday and I never have shed loads anyway typicall say 3 bottles).. Oddly enough I actually started to drink a little less since I went full HB, not because I don't want more but I try to maintain some kind of balance , not saying that is right for everyone just for me..

Yep, for me a definite risk.
Many years ago I stopped putting my beer in pressure barrels. Just too easy to keep pouring another "half".
For ages now I've only bottled. I don't brew strong beers - mainly 4% ABV or so - and the sheer effort of bottling makes it pretty difficult to drink enough to cause real damage! I hope....:-?
In my early 20s I spent 3 years in Saudi Arabia (1970s). To my surprise, it wasn't a "dry" country at all. Loads of very cheap booze - I used to buy gallon containers of pretty well neat alcohol ("uncut") for not much. It was great stuff - 5 times distilled - and you could get it "gin-flavoured" and dilute it to your requirements. So easy to drink far too much! :-(
So I did.
Not as much as a lot of the guys there, though. I never substituted spirits for solid breakfast, and always waited until I'd come home from work before I drank too much!

I've never decided exactly what an "alcoholic" is. I've met quite a few folks that were unmistakably alcoholic. A big shot of neat spirits first thing in the morning is a dead give-away!!
But, equally, I've known people that have a couple of beers every evening - and get very twitchy if they can't do it. Just a habit. I've known others who get equally twitchy if they can't have a cup of tea first thing.
For me, the big secret is not to let it become a habit. Don't do exactly the same thing night after night. Even if it ain't a lot of beer, it will lock you in if you repeat it day after day.
I believe that's why doctors recommend alcohol-free days. Not because it really helps your liver that much, but because it helps your mind! :)

I have at least 3 days break each week. I don't drink alone, (except tasters at bottling), if no one wants a drink then I don't drink, except in the pub or restaurant with a meal.

Meh. A beer or two a night. Put on a few pounds mind you. But stopping the fags didn't help that.

All in moderation at the right times I say.

40+ years home brewing. A drink most nights recently (every night?). Not a heavy drinker, just a persistent one.

But then my partner got asked awkward questions about my drinking when I was hospitalised in my "zombie" phase a few years ago ("PTA" was the proper term, not drink related, and I don't think I tried to eat anyone). Doctors checking scans and the like can see things you didn't know about. Now I keep strictly to my weekly abstention days because I consider it important proving to myself I can still do it.

I'm all too aware of the consequences of failure. One of the strictest rules of a recovering alcoholic is not to be tempted to have another drink. What would that do to a cherished brewing hobby? All that work constructing my brewery, all that learning about the best way to dispense beer. All the enjoyment of the results. All to end?

No way! I'll stick to my abstention days, maybe add some more days too. Otherwise who knows, I may start eating people!

Yes, that's a great yardstick. Drink socially, don't drink by yourself

for some , pubs are now a distant memory (closing/expense) which I blame a lot on the government for, so drinking alone is I think fairly acceptable now but like the more sensible minded ones I try to keep my drinking to the weekends, maybe the odd one after work to help unwind.
ill be honest the weather plays a big part for me. the winter will help the liver remember who it once was

Yeah I must admit I mostly drink by myself, other half doesn't really drink much.. Like I say at the weekend I just have a few to unwind in the evening to watch the rugby some TV/ movie or even play a game.

I don't drink during the week...Friday night and Saturdays if I do have a drink.

I do drink by myself on a weekend night though, she works on Friday and Saturday nights, so I'll have a few drinks whilst playing music on YouTube...it's my way of winding down.

I drink maybe 1 beer a night if I fancy 1, maybe a couple on a weekend. I have a nipper to look after so can't drink until the wife gets home from work. I've had a few nights where I've had more than I should but since I stopped making wine I haven't had that issue.

Keep my brews between 4 and 5.5% and no more than 2 a day as a general rule and I'll be fine.

I'm another of the "3 to 4 bottles on a Friday and Saturday" brigade. I've started using mini kegs but make sure they last me a Friday, Saturday, Friday as it can be far too easy to pour "just another one".

My wife has just started at Slimming World so her 2 glasses of wine on a Friday and Saturday are stopping so I might end up drinking less again.
