Why is a human being living in a slum more important than a wild animal being killed just because it reacted badly to being drugged and chained up, the wild animal didn't choose to be there!

I'm pretty sure that 99.9% of the people living in the slums didn't plan to be there either! :nono: :nono:

When we start treating our own species like the human beings they are I may find some sympathy for what was the accidental killing of wild animal.

Actually, this Thread has reminded me of a tale I heard many years ago.

A woman was out shopping when she ran into a friend in their local supermarket. She noticed that her friend had about a dozen tins of dog food in her trolley and commented “I didn’t know you had a dog.”

“Oh, we don’t.” said her friend “These are for my husband Arthur.”

“Don’t be silly, you can’t feed dog food to a human being. It’s just not right.” said the woman.

“Ha!” retorted her friend “Arthur doesn’t give me enough housekeeping money and until he increases my allowance this is what he will be eating; and he will never notice the difference.”

The woman shook her head and said “It just doesn't seem right feeding dog food to a man.” and they parted company.

About two months later and in the same supermarket the woman noticed her friend again but this time she was wearing a black dress and was obviously in mourning. Full of concern she approached her friend and asked why.

“It’s Arthur.” her friend replied tearfully, “He died two days ago in an accident." she paused as she remembered their previous meeting and carried on "The accident had absolutely nothing to do with the dog food.” she added and broke into loud sobs.

The woman saw her friend's obvious distress and after a few minutes comforting her, asked how the accident had occurred.

“It's a bit of a mystery to be honest." replied her friend. "Arthur was run over by a bus but no-one seems to know why he would just sit down in the middle of the road and start licking his private parts.”

:whistle::whistle:

I am a little confused, do you mean it was an accident it got out of its chains or the soldier accidentally killed it? either way the "wild animal" didn't ask to be there chained up and drugged and if they had not used it for some sick side show it would still be alive.

As the expert says -

When will we learn? Wild animals held captive and forced to do things that are frightening, sometimes painful, and always unnatural are ticking time bombs" our actions put them and humans at risk,” the group’s director Brittany Peet, said in a statement.

The 17-year-old female " which had been given the name Juma " was killed at a zoo in Manaus attached to a military training centre where the Olympic event took place.

The jungle cat " which is on the list of near-threatened species " was supposed to have been tranquillised, but freed itself from its shackles and approached a soldier who killed it with a single shot.

The military " which operates the zoo where Juma was kept " said the killing was necessary to protect the team that was trying to recapture her.

Okay, let's clear up a bit of confusion and get away from all the heart rending but misinformed comments that have been made on this Forum and in the press.

For a start the jaguar WAS NOT "a wild animal" and HAS NOT lived in the wilds of the Brazilian Amazon!

The jaguar was RESCUED from a certain death and the Brazilian Amazon is actually the location of the ZOO that was the jaguar's home for SEVENTEEN YEARS!

"Juma lived in the Brazilian Amazon — in a zoo
that’s attached to a military jungle training camp.
The 17-year-old jaguar spent her life there,
ever since she was taken in as a cub after her mother died."
So, the heartless military swine that shot the jaguar had actually rescued it from a certain death back in 1999 and had looked after it ever since. Shame on them!

The reports say that parading the jaguar was "an illegal act" but in actual fact the report states ...

“No request was made to authorize the participation of the jaguar ‘Juma’
in the event of the Olympic torch,” Ipaam stated."

So the "illegal act" was failing to ask permission NOT the act of parading the animal. There is no indication that should the request have been made permission would not have been granted. Obviously, with the 20-20 hindsight that most public officials have they will state that they would never have given permission; even though the jaguar was a Military Mascot that regularly went on military parades during its seventeen year life.

So now we come down to the shooting of an animal that has been rescued from a certain death and kept in captivity for seventeen years; which is five years longer than the twelve year expected lifespan of a jaguar in the wild.

The jaguar was shot because ...

".... Juma, a “docile animal used to living among people at the centre,”
was killed to protect the soldiers."

I for one would not object to someone killing ANY animal (or human being for that matter) that was threatening the life of myself or any of my friends and family.

The fact that the people who looked after the jaguar for seventeen years had to shoot it would probably have raised the same feelings that everyone has when they put a family pet to sleep.

They obviously cared for the animal, so rather than subjecting them to abuse we should be sympathising with them for their loss.

So it wasn't a wild animal because it had lived in a zoo, so why was it drugged, the answer because it was a wild animal, as the expert said it would be frightened and unpredictable.

The fact they saved it in the first place is irrelevant, as I have said if they had not taken it to the parade which as you have pointed out was illegal the animal would still be alive today, that is all.

I guess we will now have another patronising thousand word post from you telling me I am wrong.

Mo wins his second double gold.. very good, delighted for him..

Still very close but we could still finish second in the medal table which all things considered is a pretty incredible acievement.

Been some impressive achievements during this Olympics, team GB have been excellent when you think of the numbers they have to pick from being a small country in relative terms.

On Telly now ( 4pm) team of sparkly dressed women twirling bits of ribbon round and round, FOR A GOLD MEDAL?

If they can get away with that then I fully expect to see the following event installed at next games.

Filling your bladder with 10 pints and shifting elegantly from foot to foot whilst waiting in a queue for the toilet. Points for poise ,elegance and inventiveness in delaying the inevitable ( no crossing of legs allowed , instant disqualification!)
Seems more real to me than ribbon twirling!

Thank god it's nearly over, should be 2-3 days at most without all of the rubbish events, that is!

I have watched Archery, boxing and a bit of the weightlifting, the "sports" i don't like i would not want removing as i don't see why my dislike should rob those that do like them of their enjoyment, having said that i think there is way too much Olympic coverage, i turn on the radio in the morning to listen to the news and weather etc not to hear who won what medal earlier in the day, they should have an dedicated Olympic radio stations and TV channels so those that are not interested can avoid it.

Agree with the need for a dedicated channel, some nights Olympics was on 3 channels most of the night and repeated through the day. The constant switching between BBC 1 and 2 and each time they play the intro music and graphics at crucial moments. To make matters worse the News is dominated by the Olympics which has just been on 5 minutes earlier, it's not really News is it?

Reports claim Olympic kayaker capsized after hitting underwater sofa - http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/oly...er-sofa/ar-BBvkqgb?li=BBmkt5R&ocid=spartanntp

Not sure if this is true or not but it is a bit of a weird story to just make up, and several sources ran with it.

Meanwhile, Seven people injured including 2 children when a tv camera cable broke dropping it 65 feet into the crowd below. - https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/rio-...lls-65ft-onto-spectators-in-the-olympic-park/

Some reports say only 2 seriously injured which is better I suppose just to count those needing stitches.

Still, nobody's actually died yet - apart from the 15 construction workers during the building phase.

But a team with a large amount of 'financial doping' going on. iirc I read that Britain gave 30m the Britsh Olympic govening body to back its atheletes. The next closest was Australia with 18 million.
I think were one of the few countries that public fund out atheletes (via the national lottery). After our medal haul this olympics watch as other countries impelement similar public funded programmes as its obviously quite a successful way to get loads of medals

I am still uneasy about the Government taking money from a lottery which has nothing to do with sport and giving it to people not to work and pursue what is effectively their hobby. Even some of the more successful medal winners get funding in addition to their multi million PR earnings. I would rather see it go to those in need but am still not sure why I should fund someone else's hobby. After all there are no lottery funds diverted to Homebrewers to pursue excellence in their craft!

The only Rio event I've seen is the British gold performance of syncronised diving which was on the TV in the dentists waiting room while I happened to be there. Pretty amazing actually - 2 guys doing the dive thing with absolutely identical movements. The culmination of I expect hundreds and hundreds of hours of training.
Not that I'd go out of my way to watch any of this stuff.
You know how you always get it drummed into you at school that it's the taking part that matters not the winning? - well that's because the winners actually need someone else there to beat. As I learned pretty early on that I was never going to win in anything there is absolutely no point in taking part. Unless you enjoy being a patsy...

.

I have more respect for teh dentist actually who has trained for years and serves a purpose. Imagine training for years at someone elses expense to be able to dive next to someone else in an identical fashion, over in a second or two.
Apart from a momentary splash what else does that prepare you for in life?

Fortunately for you, unlike taxes you can choose whether to buy a lottery ticket or not. I've always thuoght that the lottery was a tax on poor people
