Rick was kind enough to send me a couple of bottles of his beer, twice as it happens, so here is my review of the first one.

Proper Job IPA - 7% ABV

I have not tried the original but from what I have read this appears to be a more potent imitation. I was expecting an Old Empire type beer but got something smoother and more approachable. As the pictures show, the clarity and carbonation were perfect. The head also remained all the way down the glass which raises a smile any day of the week.

The aroma was light grapefruit and also a herbal aroma but not too pronounced. I was perhaps expecting more of a hop hit but this was soft which was probably down to the few months of bottle age which has mellowed it a bit (complete guess there).

The taste defies the stature of the beer. It is a high in alcohol and IBU but the balance makes it drink very easily. The sweetness of the malt is offset by the high bittering and the acids leave the mouth watering. Full body and nice long length leaving the palate clean and looking for more - a classic bitter. This would be a great beer to accompany food - I can imagine a pint of Proper Job with a proper ploughmans being an absolute treat.

Good job Rick - I really enjoyed that.

Pure poetry  , I wish I could have said that. I agree with every word.

 I got a postage refund about three days ago for that first parcel - thanks for the review and i`m glad you enjoyed it, it was bottled mid march and I have six bottles left :( and one chilling slightly as the review made my mouth water

Hope you enjoy the kolsch as well - i`ve never had a kolsch so have no idea what it should taste like :? will be brewing more proper job soon, couple little tweaks to lower the % to about 6 and maybe some dryhopping :thumb:

Glad you got the refund. Its the first time that bottles have gone missing on me as I've been doing this beer swap thingie for a few years.

I've got the Kolsch sitting in the cupboard. Probably try it sometime next week when I have time to sit down and attempt to review. I haven't tried a commercial Kolsch either so it will be be interesting.

Thanks again.
