I dont know why ,maybe because of the nature of the internet , but I always thought that forums like these were free to create and run .
That there was some internet company some where that was responsible for setting up a forum "template" and got a bit of revenue back from banner ads. etc and that they were then occasionally run by a couple of enthusiasts just to "keep it a bit tidy".

Never really thought about it.

Today I read the post by So-Kal "Since when did posting facts break any rules ?"

What an eye opener, if you care to read the full thread and links you can get a bit of an idea what the moderators actually have to do and and the crap they have to put up with.(not aimed at So-Kal)

I come on sites like this ,for cars or vans ,allotments and homebrew tips and just assume its just another part of the net to consume ,not really thinking that its actually taken a lot of work (and cost!!!!) to create and maintain, so yeah big ups to all involved ,I know, no one likes a kiss ass, but I didn't realise it and I don't think a lot of people do either, or maybe i,m just thick.

Any way ,Cheers Chaps Spud. :thumb:

Thanks Spud

You could have posted a link though, rather than sending me off to search for that thread ;)

Some forums are free to create and run, but will usually serve you with adverts and pop-ups.

If you want to do things properly, then it does cost money and needs a bit of effort putting in behind the scenes. I should point out that my comments on that previous thread were made long before I was asked if I would join the site crew myself. I still have absolutely no idea of the sums involved, that's an Admin. thing, but I think I'm pretty safe in saying that there will be an annual licence agreement and if they don't pay it the forum will just disappear.

Incidentally, Mods' duties are just to “keep it a bit tidy”, clear out the spam and generally keep an eye on the place.

I Have no idea . . . I don know that it is run on it's own Virtual Private Server at a decent hosting provider here in the UK. My own web space cost me $7-95 a month . . .VPS solutions cost upwards of £49/month . . . from what I have seen when looking around
