In times gone by a few forums have had a word association thread.
I searched for one but can't find anything.
Word games crop up on a fairly regular basis, rapidly run to multiple pages and then start going around in circles. They may be fun for a while but most people rapidly get bored of them. A core of members keep the things going and build up large post counts.

Site crew allow them to run for a while but then start trimming them back to a manageable length and deleting page after page of utter nonsense. This soon becomes a proper pain in the posterior. When the topics go quiet for a few days we delete them in the hope that no-one will notice.

From time to time, one of the Administrators hits the big red Post Count Reset button. Posts which have been deleted then drop off your post count tally and some members complain about this, but as we see it, one word responses add nothing to overall forum content.

For example, if you look at the Harris home winemaking forum their board statistics currently show 131,157 total posts, but 17,639 of those or 13.4% of total forum content is on three puerile word games. One alone currently runs to 516 pages. That's not going to happen here. Have your fun for a while, we're not total killjoys, but don't complain when worthless dross gets deleted.

I notice that 16.6% of posts on this thread are by Forum Moderators!!!!!!!

@IPA,
The important statistic there is not the absolute postings by mods. They are also active in having an interest in the forum topic i.e. beer/wine and cider making. How much of the 16.6% is specific to managing the forum and how much is associated with their active contribution to Brewing. That would be a more interesting breakdown of the statistic.

I post a lot on this forum as a member who contribute's to the forum giving hopefully useful advice, I also happen to be a mod and not a killjoy.

Comments like that don't help we give up are time freely to help and run this forum, for your enjoyment. :thumb:

Hang on folks, I think IPA meant percentage of posts made by Moderators on that word association game, which is now up to 28%.

How sad that people attach so much importance to a number under a made up name.

Everyone wants to hit the magic thousand and make up their own "Brewer Status"... they get all excited then admin hit the big red button and they realise that they've just been busted down the ranks...

I dislike them for some unknown reason. Dump them in a "trash" or spam section which gets cleaned weekly in my opinion. Or make it so that posts in the snug do not add to post count.

Not with me, not into this post count *****!

Ive been on a couple of forums which do. Talkaudio being the one I remember best, that changed from vbb to something else and continued this trend. The reason being the fir sale section was only open after 50posts.

Thought it would be a bit of fun :(

If my post count ever gets high it means I've spent too much time discussing and not enough doing.

As a teenage guitarist, I used to frequent a forum for the Guitarist magazine (sadly no longer hosted online) where there was a real culture around one's post count. People used to think up exciting things to do for their milestone posts. One guy used to post a picture of himself naked, with something covering his 'modesty', often about to run out of a door, as he claimed he ran up his street starkers every time he notched up another thousand.

I quite liked it. Nobody *seemed* to do things simply to up their post count, it was just a fun thing to keep an eye on. Funny how each community has its own unwritten rules about these things. I passed 500 today and didn't mention it anywhere, because I had a feeling such things weren't quite as appreciated here.

Personally, I'm not bothered either way, but if I'd been on the Guitarist forum, I'd have started a specific thread to celebrate my 500, cos that's just the thing people did there.

I'm not sure what the post count means really. Either a really keen brewer, actively participating as a means of helping others, keenly joining in with general or specific discussions that interest them, fostering a friendly and knowledgeable atmosphere. ...................Or a sad ******* with too much time on their hands.

In a forum where the majority of posts are on topic you can roughly gauge a posters experience by their post count which is why I don't think they (word games etc) are beneficial.
Surely there are dedicated forums for this sort of thing?

waves at Bob......

one sad bast**d to another....lol
