Refractometer readings

Can a refractometer be used after ferment to get a reading? I was told only before you add the yeast wil it be accurate so use a hydrometer to get fg of the brew, any suggestions? The beer in question is still bubbling away so it will be a few days before I can take a reading with either. Ta!

I think the alcohol distorts the reading but I'm sure I listained to a Pod cast where a guy had developed a program to adjust for it. It was on basic brewing radio.
