I'm planning a trip to France in the new year and always make a detour over the border into Belgium to get some cheap cigarettes for the smokers in my family. This time I am planning to also go to a Belgian supermarket or beer outlet to pick up a selection of Belgian beers to try.

I know several members are far more familiar than I am, so I wondered if you could recommend some styles or brands that I should look out for. :thumb:

If you go to a beer shop not a supermarket I highly recommend duval citra triple hop the Leffe royale is also quite tasty...

Always tricky recommending without knowing someones tastes. However, in purely terms of quality of output, anything from Westmalle, St Bernadus, Rochefort, De Struisse, Orval, DuPont, Brasserie de la Senne, De Ranke, De Dolle.....I'll stop now.

Not sure if sour beer is your thing, but south of Brussels you'll often see Boon Geuze for a couple of Euros a bottle, it's worth picking one up. You might not like it, but it will be an education.

Thanks, they are going on the shopping list.

The only Belgian beers I have really tried before were lambics like Kriek, or the big brand that makes it onto the shelves of British supermarkets. I enjoyed the lambics, so I'll definitely out for the Boon Geuze, but it's about getting a selection of different beers to taste, so I can decide what's worth buying again on future trips.

You can find these in ordinary supermarkets here.

But I from North-West Flanders, not from South-West Flanders. For the best choice you should be able to go Delhaize or Albert Heijn. The biggest city in the vicinity of the border is Kortrijk. It all depends on how far you want or can drive.

Thanks for the info. There's a small Delhaize in Adinkerke where I am going, I have also read about a beer shop called Nevejan Drankcentrale in Krombeke about 25km form there.

A couple to add to Sadfield's list are anything by Abbaye Des Rocs, Girardin, Drei Fonteinen, La Trappe (yes I know they're Dutch but much more readily available in Belgium than the UK) and Cantillon (although these aren't overly common even in Belgium and can be rather pricey).

I'm off to Brussels in 3 weeks and this thread is getting me rather excited about it!

as for drinks there's far too many there to choose. I buy brigand, homel beer, lots of sour and fruit beers. But the do have a lot of abbey beers too. The st. feulian's are good, gouden carolus, st. bernadus, delerium. Lupulus is one of my faves. Steer clear of jupiler - it's the belgian equivalent of fosters

If visiting auchan dunkirk - close to the ferry, 3 monts as well as many of those above are available.

And now only to choose from this
And if you go on Saturday afternoon, you can visit these guys. It's only a small drive from Krombeke.

Yes your right just been on that delhaize website and they do have a great selection. The one I went to was a carrefour just outside Brugge, def didn’t have the wide variety... or maybe it was because I was looking for crates!! I did have trouble finding the beer from Bourgogne de Flanders ( think that’s how you spell it) anywhere outside there brewery... do you know if Theresa reason for that?

Looking on their website I see that it is available in most supermarkets and liquor stores. Shouldn't really be a problem.

One of my favourites is 'Diekirch grand cru'. Not a Belgian but from Luxembourg - about 20 yards away next door - but widely available in Belgium.
If it has to be Belgian, then any of the Leffe's. I love the Nectar, which you can get in Morrisons, Tesco etc. But there are soooo many others to choose from.............difficult to decide......:hmm:

Because they destroy beer. Their only goal is to produce as cheaply as possible and manipulate the market (malt, hop and beer markets), in order to increase the bonuses of Carlos Brito.
