Hi

I've just done a partial mash brew and thought I would try and build the recipe in to Brewers Friend and even though I know what I've physically done it seems to be a bit more confusing completing the info on BF.

I did a partial mash recipe with 2kg of grain, which was in 6 litres of water at 150f in the oven for an hour and later rinsed in 6 litres of water.

I topped up my boil pan to about 12 litres added 1.4 kgs of Light DME and did my boil. After the boil I topped up to 20 litres and now fermenting.

So on the recipe I believe I'm right to show 20 litres as batch size but the Boil Size - Pre and Post has thrown me a bit. What should I be showing here ?

I've attached the recipe print if anybody fancied having a look for me and passing comment !

Cheers

I can't understand what you've done there. Your numbers are definitely off. Why is there 12.8L of hop absorbtion and 6L of boil off losses? Then topped off with 26.8L leaving 38.5 in the fermenter? TBH I don't pay too much attention to that stuff I just use it to get me in the ballpark and take hydrometer measurements to get my actual figures.

One thing though, I'd add your DME around 10-15 mins from the end of the boil rather than at the beginning. It can caramelise in small volume boils making your beer darker than anticipated.

I was ignoring those numbers under Quick Water requirements because i really dont know where they came from at all !

I get your point on the DME.

As i say my boil was around 12 litres and once cooled i topped it up to 20 litres in my FV.

I'm just unsure on what figures to enter on the Boil Size - Pre and Post

If you just use use 20L as the batch size in fermenter the rest should work out as I think its the only volume figure thats used in the main calculations. I assume the pre and post boil are there to allow you to work out your starting volumes at the beginning of the brew process, working backwards so that you end up with 20L once you know from experience what the losses will be to grain absorption and boiling.

You could put 12L as pre boil (not sure how to account for volume of DME), and the post boil would be 20L minus whatever you added to top up if you measured the final top up amount. But it wouldn't change the ABV, gravity or IBU figures that result. They are more for reference and help planning future brews I think.

Yes your right the important figures don't change so i will ignore the Boil section and pretend its not there !

This is my second brew and I'm fairly confident things have gone to plan..

Thanks for your help.
