I've got the grub of my last brew in ny fermented that iwas gonna attempt to do washing with but I was wondering what would happen if I just throw a brew in? Would anything happen? Would it ferment? Or is it a waste of time?

It would ferment quite well, but there will be a lot of dead yeast and other matter in the leavings which might give a few off tastes like marmite etc...

Washing does remove all that, you might be ok to just try pitching on top of the cake just the once, I did it one time and the beer was ok, fermentation started quick too

no problem just ensure your cleanliness is absolute. Try and pitch it into a similar type of beer.
You can even pour it into a jug and put it into fridge overnight for the next days brew. Usually ferments well.
