Hello all,

I have been watching a few all grain videos on youtube, although I am not quite ready for that yet, I would like to try an extract kit.

I have had a look on the homebrewcompany.co.uk to see what they have available, reading the instructions it seems fairly straght forward. The only thing I am not quite sure on is the part regarding spray malts. They call for anything up to 3kg of dry malt extract, which would work out fairly expensive.

I was wondering if I were to replace the dry malt extract with liquid malt extract (either the brewferm ones on offer, or something from a health food shop), just how much I would need. Would it be a simple swap Kg for Kg, I know it may sound like a silly question, but I was unsure if the dry malt extract was more concentrated that the liquid version, or vise versa

Any pointers would be a great help, cheers

you can get 3kg of dried m e at the home brew company for £15 btw , fresh (upto 6 to 12months old) liquid extract is the best then dried malt then bakers liquid malt , liquid yeast will give you even better results too

Thanks for the info, I have seen h&b have the buy one full price and the other for a penny sale on, I was thinking of getting liquid malt there, as I could get around 3.6kg for under £10, I just don't know if I can do a kg for kg swap in the place of dried malt extract

Should be OK with the H&B stuff but you can bet your bottom dollar that it hasn't had hot or cold breaks so you might not get the clearest of pints...

Should taste fine though I guess...
