Hey Folks,

Not sure I'm posting this in the right place but thought I'd give it a go and see if I can get some advice.

Can anyone tell me how adding extra protein and a few vitamin type things might affect the brewing process and the taste of the final product of my beer? Is this a bad idea? It's just that I'm quite into health and fitness and like the idea of brewing something that I can call 'extra healthy beer'.

That's probably an overly unspecific question to get a good answer but a push in the right direction is all I'm after as I'm very new to all this home brewing stuff.

Thanks in advance.

If you're concerned about keeping healthy you should probably keep away from anything containing alcohol so doubt the value of adding vitamins. Though my dad was a heavy drinker (not alcohol dependent) and he suffered pretty badly from Thiamine deficiency so, if you are going to add anything, add that.

I wouldn't bother adding them directly, but a multivit might be an idea as a supplement.

Sorry that we seem to neglected this initial inquiry, somewhat.

Proteins from Barley (and to a lesser extent, Wheat) are present in an AG brew. The addition of a fining agent is basically aimed to remove these proteins as they give the beer a murky or hazy look.

Since the use of glass became de rigeur for beer drinking some time in the early part of the last century, cloudy looking beer has been a big No No.

The principal vitamin deficiencies in the UK are roughly speaking:

Vit "C" - from fruit and vegetables. Ascorbic acid can be taken in tablet form to make up for the fact that since the dawn of agriculture, the human diet has been less rich in this Vitamin.
Vit "D" - formed by the action of sunlight on human skin. Dark skinned individuals who keep themselves perpetually covered in the northern parts of the country might be particularly effected - but can't say that for multiple irrational reasons.
Vit "B12" - Only really found in meat derived products, a proportion of which is basically essential. Not much, but some. Even ruminants get some protein from small creatures eaten alongside grass. This could be the reason that humans rejecting the 200 thousand years evolution of their species does not actually work out too well in practice.

Just thought I'd chime in here, B12 is actually synthesised by bacteria which are found in soil as well as the guts of animals. If everything wasn't washed to within an inch of its life we would probably get some B12 from vegetables and fungi.

Do I think people are biologically vegetarian or vegan,no way. We can thrive on a variety of diets. But I do think it is reasonable to take a tablet containing a vitamin synthesised by bacteria in a lab as opposed to using other living feeling creatures as a substrate or medium for producing vitamins.

Also isn't it a massive rejection of 200 thousand years of evolution to ignore the fact that we have gained enough intelligence to synthesise vitamins and other things, and to simply continue as we always have done?
