Hi

I have bought some Pots from bergland and was planning on getting them cut from a local fabricator bot they are not interested so its a DIY job. I don't have the tools for a curare measuring of the items i am putting in my pots. Could you guys help.

This is the element i will be using

This tap kit

and 21mm for the sight glass.

Hi
Good luck with your build. My 'rule of thumb' for cutting s/s is 'less is more' - if the hole is tight, you can grind or file it out a bit; if it's too big and leaks, you can't put any back! I use a 1.5" (38.1mm) Qmax for elements. Slightly undersized for Backer/Haden etc elements, but it's easy enough to offer the element thread to the hole, and grind/file it until the element fits.

For tap holes, I use a 22mm cone bit. Helps implement the 'less is more' principle - I drill to the 20mm 'step', then continue steadily, repeatedly offering the tap thread to the hole until it fits. Of course, I'm using what I have to hand - others will swear by a 21mm Qmax for the tap :|

Remember that overheating s/s hardens it, so use plenty of WD40, 3-in-1, old engine oil or whatever to lube it. I've done 4 pots as described, and none has had a problem with their d-i-y re-engineering!

Cheers,
Chris

I think the element diameter is 38mm. The tap is clearly stated as 21mm and I know Qmax do both sizes.

Here's another thread on the same issue, if you look in search you will find even more info.

where r u based? if close to ox4 i can punch out your holes for you having tooled up for my own pot build.

i would recommend 20mm for 1/2" bsp or 15mm compression sized fittings, a snugger hole automatically centers the fittings in a 21mm hole u may have to hold everything central to make a seal.

Thanks for the help. I have got 21mm cutter and it worked well. Unfortunately i live in York so a bit far.
