Hello all
The plan was to try a partial mash tomorrow so while in Chester earlier I nipped into Chester homebrew in Saltney to pick up a few bits one being proto floc or Irish moss for my planned brew...he is in the process of moving the business. .across the road and what I needed was in the other shop..and he had other customers in...in short I didn't get any. Is adding the said stuff absolutely essential?

Cheers

I have used both and my favourite is the Proto Floc pills. I don't know if they are any good in so far as I have always used them and have had clear beer within a very short time (hours). I suppose I could compare it with the Coopers kit I did where I steeped some grain before adding hops and put this in with the kit. I didn't use anything on that and it is still cloudy even after bottling some three weeks later! I sure yours will turn out ok but from what I have seen this stuff is pretty good at getting the proteins out of the beer sharpish.

Ok...I think I'd like to try some but I'll wait...I've got a few kits to get through yet..

Cheers

I would most sincerely recommend doing a mash and adding it to a kit - sort of half and half. The results are not far short of a "proper" AG brew. Big step up from kits, for mine, and a very forgiving approach as "mistakes" on the AG side will not make so much difference to the final result.

I've never used protofloc tablets before.I did use carrageenan on my first few brews which I gathered, sun dried and blended the seaweed myself, but now I add nothing for clearing the beer as I find 2+2+2 does it justice....:thumb:

Apparently, if you don't use kettle finings you can have problems with the shelf life of your beer but I can't find anything definitive on why or how long it'll be before the beer starts to turn. If you're worried about clarity you could use some finings in the fermenter.

I usually throw in a Protofloc tablet after the 60 minute boil, let it boil for 10 minutes then add the Aroma Hops for another 5 minutes before flame-out.

The flocculation after introducing the Protofloc is easily seen and with a quick whirlpool of the wort it greatly reduces the amount of debris that finds its way into the FV. :thumb:

I never use Finings and the beer clears just fine after a few weeks.
