I'm a bit worried I might have screwed up my first batch. I transferred the brew from one container to another in order to allow the beer to clear a little more before bottling. However, in a moment of madness I simply opened the tap on the primary and let it fill up the secondary. According to many internet posts, this is bad bad bad as I have heavily oxidised the beer now. Apparently I should have carefully siphoned it.

Has anyone any advice? Have I ruined the batch? Can I 'de oxidise'? I see mention of Campden tablets online, are they suitable?

If there was lots of splashing and foaming there is a good chance it'll be oxidised i'm afraid

You never know though, stick with it :thumb:

better off next time using a syphon i was thinking of transferring using tap but its too near the sediment. It can be done if you connect a pvc hose to your tap and let it run out carefully as long as you filter it on the way. Too much messing really.

With any luck you slopped enough yeast over as well to eat the oxygen. If there is oxygen in there the problems get worse with age so drink it!

so why is there a tap on the fv ? i have used tap on all my brews so far and no off flavours at all, just a happy secondary ferment of 2 weeks or so after initial ferment of 3-4 days at 27c
maybe i was lucky :?:

some fv has a tap you can fit a little bottler to the tap so you can syphon but this device has a solid tube and a filter. You push it on the tap and when you press the end into your bottle liquid comes out when you pull it up from the bottom of your bottle the flow of liquid stops. Its a good way to fill bottles they are on ebay about £6. I prefer to syphon with pvc tubing. :D
