I got this idea from Sonnal. So thanks loads!
I find beer straight out of the fridge far to cold and beer at room temp is OK but not ideal. What I could really do with is a beer fridge but I may as well wish for a flying unicorn to commute to work on as I don't have the room (for a flying unicorn or a beer fridge).
So when I saw one of Sonnal's posts mentioning plastic ice cubes I thought this might be the answer. After asking her where you can get them from I eventually got some from ebay.
The interweb tells me serving temp for ale is between 12C-14C and after putting 4 in my beer, I had to wait a bit of course, but they did the trick! They got my beer down to serving temp - just like sitting in the pub but without having to leave the house. You can of course put more or less cubes in to have your own preferred temps.
Bit odd to look at though, four bright orange lumps of plastic floating in my beer like a quartet of irradiated dice.

Great idea, i hate trying to get ice cubes out of those plastic trays you put in the freezer.

When I win the lottery i'm going to get a beer humidifier that keeps my ales at 12c. I'm serious, if you have that kind of money you can do this sort of thing.

I like to use the ice mugs that have liquid in the sides that you put in the freezer. They cool beer down pretty quickly without diluting it.
