I think I have got this in the right section but on to the question

I am doing my first larger brew kit and have been looking at bottles, now I am on a tight budget at the moment so have been hunting round for the cheapest way to bottle my brew, I have found some on ebay that are PET crown top bottles which look a lot cheaper than the glass ones, but the question is are they any good :?:

now I know the land lord of the local boozer and can go and raid his bottle bins when ever I like but he has said that some of the commercial breweries are using different size tops to stop people from re-using them, so is there any of the ones from there that anyone can recommend? to be honest the only pint size ones he stocks are the generic fashion cider bottles rather than real ale bottles so what are peoples opinions on re-using them :?:

I am new to this so please be gentle :D

Magners / bulmers bottles are ideal. You will however have to buy a capper.

If you are after pet bottles, pop to your local supermarket and buy some cheap fizzy drink (soda water etc) and use those bottles. You can use whatever size you want but I would recommend not using 2 litre bottled, unless you drink it all in one go.

Whatever bottles you use, just make sure they have contained carbonated liquid previously otherwise they will not withstand the pressure :thumb:

I agree with this asdas own fizzy water in 500ml green pet bottles is the way you should go if you want to save money

thanks for the responses, I have been looking at the cappers, I am a bit dubious about the one you hit with a hammer  but have seen one with a couple of handles for about £10 that I will get.

the local young ish lot drink a lot of magners and bulmers so I can go for a raid this weekend and get a load of them for free, we dont really drink any fizzy drinks in our house, well unless there is alcohol involved anyway  so I would just be buying then to chuck down the sink which seems a waist :(

Only bottles I've found to be a pain were the Wychwood bottles (and then only if you are using a 2-handled capper rather than a hammer-type or bench-press).

Magners, Bulmers or any ale bottles are great. Try to get brown if possible as it lets less light through to the beer than clear or green.

cool cheers, looks like its a trip to the pub, and it would be rude not to have a pint while im there :D

For my firs brew I will use plastic bottles with a screw top. this thread has made me think though. I am brewing a beer that requires maturing in bottles for 5-8 weeks. would the taste be compromised?
