Picked up a bargain but ...

Hi guys

Hope everyone is good , I managed to pick up a good wee bargain last night from gumtree , a coopers DIY beer kit .

Basically it's the 30l beer bucket , spoon, hydrometer, bottling wand (which I was just about to buy [emoji6]) ,10 new PET bottles n caps and 13 used PET's

Now the but , the 13 used bottles have been used for said beer kit, what's the best way to get rid of the smell of beer I'll be using them for cider tbh I'm happy with what I paid even if I need to throw the other 13 away

Yeah I love a bargain too. Over the years I've acquired most of my brewing kit for free from peeps that have dabbled and given up, I was offered some DJ's for free the other day and will collect them when I'm next passing.

I would wash with hot soapy water and then soak your smelly bottles with a 4 tab per litre campden solution overnight.

Yeh bargains make it all the more pleasurable and make sit look like it's costing less to the other half [emoji23] on saying that I'm going to tesco to pick stuff up later [emoji85] with her [emoji23][emoji23]

I'll give it a bash see if I can rid the smell , I'm definitely not a beer lover so it has to go to even think about using them , but like I say it's not a massive loss [emoji106]

I wouldn't use soapy water. I never use soap on any of my beer making stuff. In fact I don't even wash my beer glasses in soap.

Bleach would better I think. Then a bloody good rinse. That's what I did the last lot of slightly grimey bottles I bought with.

sodium percarbonate is another good cleaner.

If you use soapy water (fairy liquid) as long as it is rinsed well with hot water (I use boiling) it should be fine, I've had no problems with this method in many years, even with cleaning dj's that have been left outside and gone really manky!

Do you have any VWP ? it's another steriliser but a strong cleaning agent too, I use this for soaking my FV's after a batch and they come out super clean. If you don't then not much point in buying it, cos the cost of a few pet bottles isn't much.

I do actually roddy that's the one I use [emoji106] I'll give it a go if the come out then good if not the recycle bin can have them for the tenner I spent I've got my money's worth with the other stuff [emoji6]

I'd second VWP, it's what I use just make sure you rinse well. I'd be dubious about putting boiling water in PET bottles.

Don't put boiling water into PET bottles. The walls soften and distort . They are then only really fit for the recycle bin.

Yes boiling water is ok in glass Dj's but not plastic, I don't like using plastic because of the leaching phtallates health risks, slowly turning all men sterile and other cancer issues.:nono:

Roddy you said you had the same kit the coopers one ! Have or can the FV be used for doing cider or wine ?

In my mind it can't because it's not sealed

yeh I've done loads of wine/cider in it, doesn't need to seal, loose fitting lids 'burp' off the excess co2 but keep a layer of it above the brew, protecting it from the air

And I'm remembering the time I was rushing (not something that goes well with brewing) and tried to dry them with swmbo hair dryer, gentle wafts I swear. Half of them ended up looking like St Mary's in Chesterfield

The subject of chemicals leaching from plastic into your wine has been discussed many times, no one has ever given proof this actually takes place and how much is leeched if any, having said that I moved to glass screw tops a while ago because of this discussion, for me its not worth the risk and bottles are free if you ask for them.
I would not pour boiling water directly into a cold DJ for obvious reasons.
