Hello all!

After a lovely pint or two in the Arden Arms (Stockport) which is well worth a visit if you visit the rainy town of Stockport I noticed a few old posters for Robinsons and/or brewerys Robinsons have swallowed up over the years there are a few references to the 'Cheshire Tradition of using oat/oat malt' in pale beers. I have never heard of this before. Has anyone tried it or know of an existing commercial example? I am doing Alemans Oatmeal Stout next week so will have plenty of oats left so I will be trying it?

Any suggestions ladies and gents?

I quite like the idea of that :thumb:

Just googled it and it comes up with the usual suspects of american sites here is one

I was up your way this morning visiting our LHBS

I was going to head down today but decided to tidy the house then enjoy afew homebrews in the garden.... have to tidy the house up first to get some SWMBO points...

Did they have the thermo pots in?

I have something like this on my ' Things to brew' list ( been on there for about 2 years though )

I was inspired by a local micro who basically did the same thing in terms of using left over oat malt from a stout.

From chatting to him, the recipe called for 10% oat malt - he was hopping with First Gold and there may have been some late EKG in there.
He had also used 2-3% crystal but that was as much for the colour he was after - you may want to think about some cara or similar though for your pale?

In any case, the beer was superb - enough for me to scribble down those odd notes anyway when I got home ( admittedly they could have been better, but I probably sampled a fair few beers whilst there )

Definitely worth a go anyway :thumb:

I was thinking something around 5%

80% Pale (or lager+pale 50/50 split)
10% Oat
10% light Crystal or maybe carapils

EKG or Cascade... single hop anyway.

I like the sound of that. You wouldn't need to toast the oat either but you would still need a glucan rest.

I'm doing a proper job clone tommorow but it won't totally be like Proper Job as I am short of hops and my replacements haven't arrived :? .

I have got some oats :hmm:

Perhaps

90% Pale
5% wheat Malt (northern to the core)
5% Oats

Hmmm :wha:

I have emailed Robbinsons to see if they can help as they will have in the archive what they used to make. As its a discontinued beer/brewery hopefully they will have some info. I have the direct email for the head brewer but don't like to pester him.

Why not try an 100% oat beer...? like THIS one, at the bottom of the recipe is a link to his review of the beer.

It sounds like an interesting experiment. Although a 3 hour mash sounds tedious, I'm sure theres probably a step mash profile that would reduce that time....

Well I think tommorow I am going to do this

proper Job

It is based on Proper job except I have had to adjust the hops and include some challenger as I haven't got enough Willamette. I have also added wheat malt and flaked oats.

Don't know what yeast I have got Notty and US-05

Looks like a tasty brew. I think us05 just because of the hops! My yeast of choice. At the moment.....

Had a look at that 100% oat beers sounds interesting think I'll one mentioned above before I do 100%.

Nothing back from robbies yet.

pdtnc did a double oat pale that was very good. It uses NS so I doubt it has much to do with the Cheshire tradition of oats in beer.

link is to his blog because the search function on this board is...well it could be improved imo.
