My local HBS has Maris Otter pale malt & Optic Pale malt, Iv only ever used MO. Can anybody tell me the difference between the two? :wha:

You can also get a pale malt refered to as "Pearl", but like you I've only ever used MO.

I prefer Golden Promise PM, but in HB terms there isn't much in it. Each has a slightly different taste, I would just ask to taste some next time you are in, then go with which ever you prefer/can get. If you are trying to emulate a specific brew then you may need to use the malt they used but in general terms yeast has more effect on the taste than the base malt.

Optic is one of the most used malts in large scale lager brewing atm & the most used malt in whiskey making in scotland.

The only major difference is that optic will give you more body than MO, you would be hard pressed to really tell the difference though, its the yeast you use which really depicts the finished product.
