Good evening mates.

I opened a packet of that Alcotec 48hr turbo yeast stuff 4 days ago and it just dawned on me that maybe I should have put it in the fridge (there are no storage instructions on the pack).

My question is, will it be ok now if I fridge it or should I just bin it and take it as a lesson learnt & buy some more.

Cheers!

I don't know how much it cost, but I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't knowingly be throwing four x £1 coins into a waste bin! I suggest that you use it on something. :gulp:

as soon as its opened its vulnerable to atmospheric moisture, in its dehydrated state its highly hydroscopic, popping it in a sealed bag/air squeezed out in the fridge will maximise its potential,

Just ensure you hydrate before use regardless of instructions use warm water (30c preboiled/cooled) and use asap. this should maximise the survival rate over coming some of the shock of hydration.

its a fuel yeast and imho is a dirty fermentor producing fussels and really bad pongs during the primary phase. It stank the house out the one time i used it, If it came with activated charcoal finnings DONT be tempted to open that till you use it it can be quite messy if spilt..

To be fair, I'm not using it as part of my "proper" brewing kit, just to experiment and see what's possible. I made some 48hr apple "moonshine" which was quite funny :smile6:

I'll just keep it airtight in a cool place and try use the rest asap in some other crazy brew I guess :thumb:

Been there, done that :) plastic bottles, champagne yeast, perforated balloons: Sing Sing Cider, because it was prisonbrew. But it was "drinkable". After a while. Brrr.

Yeah the moonshine was 'orrible in my opinion but the missus thought it was quite nice. Looks like I'm making more of it then I suppose!

I've kept half an open packet of Alcotec Turbo yeast in the freezer for over 6 months and it worked fine. Just folded the top down and put a rubber band around it.
