Hello all,

Absolute homebrew noob here. I had an offer of a lot of apples for free, and as there's only so much pie you can eat, I had the idea of making a batch of cider.

I blended the apples (first mistake, I presume) then passed off the juice into a plastic FV with some Lidl apple juice to make up the quantity to 5 gallons (go big or go home, eh?). I threw in a bunch of cider yeast, sealed the lid then set it up in the garage with an airlock and off it went.

A fortnight later, I transferred into the glass carboy and at this stage I have noticed two things. It's very cloudy, and smells a bit like farts. I'm assuming that I've let a lot of particulates and pectin through by blending the apples, and I've read that the sulphur smell is 'normal' and should pass.

Everything was cleaned and sanitised before I started, and I didn't once lift off the lid of the FV before I transferred into the glass carboy, so I'm fairly confident that it isn't infected.

Anyhoo, what I'm getting at, is if I throw some Pectolase in and give it time, will it clear up, and how long should I give things until the smell of bottoms goes away?

I've obtained yet another 25+kg of apples, so I would like advice on these things before I start another batch.

Cheers,

H

For reference of how cloudy we're talking...

Looks absolutely normal.
It will clear on it's own once fermentation has stopped. (Move to a cooler place once fermentation has ceased.)
The bottmy smell will dissipate fairly rapidly at the same time.
Patience really is your best ally in this project!

FWIW - It's normally the RIGHT thing to blend the apples!!!
