Hi all.
Got a coopers bitter kit on the go on Saturday done the usual steralised all equipment the lot. Trouble is there is no bubbling from the air lock. Surly it should have started by now. It was a tin i bought about a year ago but the best before was oct 2010. Any ideas.

Is there activity in the FV, you should start to see the krausen form. Don't trust airlocks - quite often lids don't seal and let CO2 out anyway.

Also, if it was that out of date did you replace the yeast ?

I had a quick gander on tinternet about how long yeast will keep and what peeps are saying is it's between 6 months and two years. So quite a big difference. It was in a foil sealed packet so I'm hoping it is ok. Just can't understand why no bubbles have started in the air lock, it seems to be a tight fitting lid but i had to have a look inside today and as i said it's got the froth and the scum round the side of the bucket.
Thanks for the input Hawks.

No matter how tight fitting it may look co2 may still escape out other than the airlock. It's best not to rely on an airlock to let you know how a fermentation is going...

As said, sounds like it's still going, so no need to worry

Thanks for the reassurance guys  Never had a problem with bubblers up till now. Might leave bubblers out altogether now. To much worry :)

Used air locks for my first couple of brews, and found I kept checking them, and not hearing anything, so started worrying... But both brews were fine, so now will not bother

Some people will advise you the best thing to do is stamp on them.. :hmm: or pop in a DJ and make some wine

A lot of people do like them for an easy sign of activity, but as you can see yourself they are far from reliable - trust what you see and a hydrometer. :thumb:
