Hi, I put a brupak old ale kit on last night. As it was late & I wanted to go to bed I suspect I may have pitched the yeast before the wort was cool enough(28* instead of the recommend 20*-25*). There's no gas whatsoever this morning & no head forming.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Many thanks,

Adam.

at that temp it could be a couple of days before it starts, but it will LEAVE IT ALONE

Excellent, just the sort of replies I was looking for! So I haven't killed the yeast then?

28C shouldnt kill the yeast though, it should be fine up to 30 at least.

But I'm going to have to disagree with the other replies. If I dont see any sign of activity within a few hours I start looking in the freezer for some more yeast. If after 12 hours theres no activity then something is certainly wrong. The wort is at its most vulnerable at the moment so if you have any spare yeast, pitch it in now.

i have had beer take 12-16 hours before to start, i found aerating the wort before pitching gave me a start time of 2-3 hours :)

+1 for leave it well alone

+1 for aerate THOROUGHLY before you add your yeast

I use a drill with a paint paddle - the paint paddle only costs a couple of quid from screwfix, and obviously it's only used for brewing

Either develop muscles like Arnie, or get a paint paddle ;)

The wort was aireated with a paddle & drill for a good 5 mins before pitching my yeast. I do have some spare at home however I'm working now & won't get near it again until this evening! Starting to get worried again now....

in that case take an SG reading - if it's not shifted, pitch in some fresh yeast, or you may be surprised and find the SG has dropped quite a bit already, in which case leave well alone :thumb:
