Apologies for the double post, but the original thread kept coming up with an error and not letting me post... I tried closing the browser, logging out and in again...

Please see the original here - viewtopic.php?f=21&t=19101

That's exactly what I wanted to hear! :D

However, while I've never smelt beer vinegar, this smells exactly as I would expect it to...
Having said that, it's definitely fermenting in there as the top of the bin is really bulging (lid on tight and then one bit unclipped)

I guess the question is this - If it were vinegar, would it still be fermenting? Or would the vinegar have killed the yeast?

I tend to use closed fermenters http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/home-brewi ... edmw%3D%3D

with these taps (Hozelock - as I use hozelock fittings on the pipes I use to transfer brews between primary and secondary etc) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Plastic-Hozel ... 2c5fdb303b

However I do have a couple of of buckets with lids, I use these to put an airlock in the lid: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-X-spare-air ... 19c801d0e5

Plus an airlock http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/standard-airl ... 19c89ed873 - you can pick up these from Wilko's for £2.80 for two, just use the grommet instead of the bung.

Lots swear by cracking a corner of the lid open, and there's nothing wrong with that, but I've always used closed fermenters and not had a failed brew yet. :thumb:

Good luck and welcome to your new obsession
