Hi guys, I'm Nick and I'm new to brewing, I'm currently on my 3rd attempt, this time an Oktoberfest beer and previously tried a cerveza that was ok and before that a pilsner that was horrific 😅

Welcome Nick

This forum is a really great place to learn - so do ask :?:

If you are able to say what you mean by horrific - you may receive some ideas about preventing it happening again

Cheers

Loads really, I didn't sanitise the bottles properly, I used a pressure barrel 1st then bottled because I changed my mind, amongst other things I can't remember 😅 🙃

Pressure barrels can cause all sorts of problems

Your Oktoberfest brew will be legendary, I have total confidence in you :beer1:

Quick question, when working out the abv should the calculation be as a minus or am I messing up? I'm doing current gravity minus starting gravity times 135.25

Take a look at this link

ABV Calculator Alcohol By Volume ABV Calculator - Brewer's Friend

ABV is usually given a 1.***

So you take your original gravity (start of fermentation) e.g. 1.050

Then take it again at the end of fermentation e.g. 1.010

Hence a drop of 40 units - times this by 0.131 (don't ask me why this number) so

40 X 0.131 = 5.24 ABV
