Hi there

just a simple question. can you use spray dried malt (brown powdered stuff) instead of mashing the wort? if you couldn't tell i'm very inexperienced so that may seem a pretty stupid question.

thinking if i'm following receipes i can add the spray malt rather than mashing the wort.

cheers

John

I think you're talking about extract brewing, i.e. re-hydrating Dried Malt Extract (DME) rather than extracting the sugars from malted barley (mashing) to make the wort. Extract brewing is a half way between kits and AG and, in short, yes you can.

It won't be a one-for-one swap between grains and DME but you will find recipes that show how much DME to use in lieu of the grains... e.g. Graham Wheeler's book (others are available).

Make sense?

yes, which Brian Wheeler book so i can hunt for it on amazon?

also knowing what terms to use means i can search alot easier..

many thanks

John

If you are very new to this, and planning your first brew, then I would recommend doing a kit first. The kits are good nowadays, and only get better with a few tweaks.

That way you could concentrate on keeping things clean, getting the process into your head and getting your head around primary, secondary, racking, etc, etc, etc. Throwing in extract brewing with hop timings, boiling times and breaks etc will complicate matters massively, which is fine when you know what you are doing with the rest of the process.

From there either tweaking the kit to suit your tastes or just jumping into extract brewing would be in order IMO... and after that if you have a real taste for it the step to AG is a lot easier. It's still a big jump due to the mashing process but the boiling/hopping/etc will remain very very similar to extract.

Too expensive an outlay, and I can use the internet on the go with 3g speed without a contract :)
