I'm half way through my Young's APA kit and need something new to try.

Right now I am into my craft beers and hoppy west coast ales - Can anyone suggest something similar to the Young's APA?

Thanks!

Have you thought of taking another Young's APA kit and after fermentation is completed splitting it into two smaller FV's and cold hopping them with different varieties of hop?

That way, you would be able to compare the original APA with the two cold hopped varieties and see which you prefer.

It's all about learning what happens with cold hopping, whether you like more hops, which hops you prefer etc.

Hope this helps. :thumb:

The Young's American IPA was my first (and fourth) kit and having just finished the APA, I would rate the IPA above it (others may disagree). I preferred the blend of hops, but be aware it is stronger then the APA by about 1%
I think it is very similar to bengali tiger which you can get with your meal at wetherspoons.

As i don't think anyone else has said it yet....if you fancy the dark side of AG brewing have a look at http://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=51779
A simple SMaSH (single malt and single hop) can be an awesome drink, and is easier than you think
(I did my first 2 AG stove top brews without a bag and just drained the grain against the pan lid and through a sieve as I didn't want to buy anything else if I didn't enjoy the process....)

As dutto suggested trying another kit and splitting with different hops can be a very enjoyable experiment too - have a search for the coopers or John bull ipa kits for suggestions.

Enjoy!

Good tips thanks guys. The youngs APA sometimes has a dark taste but I am risking pouring more in so likely I am catching more sediment at the bottom which taints the flavour!

I ended up getting the bulldog American craft pale ale which I'm going to start soon. Weird thing is that it doesn't come with any priming sugar but tells you to add sugar, why sell a kit that is missing a key ingredient? There's no mention of sugar on the box contents list either :-/

P.s just reading that link now. The pain with home brew is waiting 6 or so weeks until you can taste it. I never thought about doing smaller quantities and experimenting that's a brill idea !! :)

Just kicked off an youngs APA last night and made a hop tea to mix in with the wort.
I used a similar recipe to brew dog dead pony. Going to dry hop with different hops too.
I've made a few youngs IPA and they have came out brilliant.

Not all kits come with priming sugar, the Bulldog range being one of them. It's really a more recent thing with the Youngs and Festival kits to include priming sugar. Most of the other kits I've ever made don't come with any either.

Normal granulated sugar is fine for priming of which most folk have some in the house.
