Made Coopers aussie real ale last sat, today i opened the FV all i can smell is nail varnish please say its ok

No that is acetone :nono: :nono:

Does it taste like nail polish ie solventy? If so this is probably due to a high fermentation temp at what temp did it ferment?

If it tastes solventy then I am afraid it needs to be chucked as it will give you bad hangovers.

While the normal oxidative organic pathway is alcohol -> aldehyde -> acid, what you have with a ketone (probably propanone, glucose splits to give two propanone molecules), it is not a normal organic pathway of yeast, and probably means you beer is infected.

Aleman, would you be able to expand on this?

I only ask as my understanding was that ketone smelt sweet, almost perfumey. I am diabetic and if i forget my insulin i can go into ketosis of which a side affect is a sweet smelling breath akin to pear drops. I know it is not exactly the same but just want a better understanding incase I detect the same smell.
