I have been brewing in small batches so malt prices have not been too much of a problem. But now I am hooked again I need to buy at good rates, that means buying 25kg at a time. I was concerned that I would not use 25kg quick enough if I bought ready crushed. So I have bought a little mill to replace the "SPONG" that got lost years ago. This was only 30 quid and does a terrific job. I tested it on a half kilo before I order 25kg from the Malt Miller, and it works just fine. Took 30 seconds to do half kilo. I was concerned that some of the smaller grains werent cracked, but when I checked my bag of professional stuff it was exactly the same.

Not quite.

I assume pre-crushed grains won't keep as long as whole ones?

No I said I was getting the malt from the Malt Miler not the mill?

One little tip. Keep the hopper charged, because the grain going through keeps the grinding wheel even. When it get nearly empty the grain comes out of the bottom whole as the wheel tilts to one side.

Yes, I understand its two months crushed against one year whole.
It's much longer than that. . . . but you do need to store it cool and dry.

visited Marks at the weekend and his tub of grain is surrounded by mouse traps :D :D :D

What would you estimate in your experience?
At least 6 Months, although I have also used crushed at 12 months with little problems . . . but I do store my grain double bagged with 500g packets of silica gel between the bags.

Muntons put a BBE date of 12 months on their crushed malt

What does everyone store their grains in then? I have a 25kg sack of crushed Crisp MO, and several others that I want to store in the shed, but I'd need something animal, air and water resistant. I was thinking an animal feed bin, but they're not cheap and I know people on here like to do things as frugally as possible.

I use ex-sweet containers - big blue tubs about 35 litres each, lids have big metal sprung clamps to hold them on, I think they were about 5 quid each off fleabay but I collected them to save cost - somewhere near Selby.
