Hi all, will attempt to split a wyeast smackpack tommorrow, have read a how to somewhere where he splits a yeast into 12 using 500 grm
dme boiled in 4pints of water and topped up with 4 pints of cooled boiled water to make a gallon,as i want to do 6 splits do i use 250 grm of dme and boil with 4 pints of water,or boil with 2 pints and then top up with 2 more. am thinking about SG or does it not matter.
also can i use small water bottles to store my 6 starters(still water bottles).
can i smack my pack straight out of the fridge or leave to reach room temp which is about 28c at the moment.
 johnluc

Smack the pack then wait until its expanded, this can be anything from a few hours to a few days depending on the age etc. I also split 6 ways and start by using 100gm of malt extract in a litre of boiled water which will take about 2 days. You can split then but I prefer to pour off the spent wort then add 200 gms of malt extract in 2litres of boiled water again leave 2 days then split. This gives you a a lot more yeast cells and gives a healthy start. I pour off the spent wort and add a bit of cooled boiled water to make it more managable
