Right my first time messing with a kit here is what happened :-)

OG 1038 FG 1010 i didn't want a strong beer but missed off the DME asked for in the kit because i thought the grains would make up for it but they didn't pull there weight. Ended up about 3.7% so a nice session beer

The ingredients.
300g of Amber Crushed Malt
Coopers select IPA beer kit
300g of sugar
Fuggles hops
Goldings hops

First off steeped the grains in 3Lts for 30 min about 65 deg an added to the FV.

IMG_0072 by mattypullin,

Added the kit to 3 Lts of hot water with the sugar and added to the FV.

Drank a few more beers, filled and capped my bottles (the ones i sterilized earlier not the ones i had just drank :D )

IMG_0101 by mattypullin,

Put them all back in the wardrobe for 2 weeks and moved them to the spare room today. I put one in the fridge and cracked it open to test and here is the result.

Got a nice psst sound when i opened the bottle. Got an ok head on the beer at first but it didnt last more than a few minutes. It has a light hoppy aroma and the first flavor you get is a sorta a digestive biscuit taste, im guessing it came from the added malt. That is followed by quite a bitter taste its not too unpleasant but stays with you. It tastes overall not bad, it is after all only 2 weeks old. im hoping the head retention and bitterness get better as the beer develops in the bottle with age. One slight problem is the beer has failed to clear, im not too sure what has caused that (see below).

Any ideas?

Its been fun, proof that you can brew half decent beer anywhere! even in a pokey little 2 bed flat

well done mate, looks good. I had one of my IPA's that i brewed in end of Sept. It still doesn't have a decent head. I think yours will turn out a much better pint than mine (done according to the instructions). Not sure why its cloudy though? did you rack it to a secondary?

Could be, i did have to wrap it in a quilt from day 1 it got very cold here up north in the 2nd week of fermentation :D

LB - no mate i bottled straight from the FV i only have 1 of them. Im thinking of getting a 2nd, a smaller one as i plan to try smaller size brews, extract first then AG when im feeling brave.

I've found that by racking to a secondary fv after initial fermentation is completed you'll leave behind a lot of the sediment. I then place second fv in cold garage for a few days to let the yeast drop out. I then rack from secondary fv to bottling bucket after a few days which leaves even more sediment behind and then from bottling bucket to bottle. You're then left with nice clear beer. :thumb:

I'd think the cloudiness could be from adding the grain steepings to the FV without being boiled first? (Or did you?)

how to deal with cloudy beer..............

shut eyes ...drink !
