I had this beer in Mexico some time ago, and thought I'd like to try to brew something similar.....

It's basically a dark lager (I would call it Chestnut - forgive me if I'm wrong). There's plenty of info if you google "modelo negra"..

Does anybody have any pointers on how I could do this please? Or where I can look?

I'm not looking for an exact clone, but just want to brew something similar as it's a bit unusual.

I drank this beer in Madrid earlier in the year and it's amazing! I'm afraid I can't really help with the recipe but i'll be keeping an eye on your attempts with interest!

I did wonder if anybody else would be interested....

I've never had anything quite like it before, or since.

There's a recipe for it in the CloneBrews book (Szamatulski^2). I don't have the book to hand, but as luck would have it, if you look it up on Amazon it's one you can 'Look Inside' giving you a few sample pages, Negra Modelo happens to be one of the sample pages.
I traveled around Mexico as a student back in the early 90s, I remember this was one of the few decent brews I tasted on my travels.

Thanks for the pointer - you couldn't have been more specific

I did enjoy this drink too - hence my post.... and as I mentioned, I fancied something a bit unusual.

I had it once really somewhere obscure, like Las Vegas, then was surprised (and, I suppose, somewhat disappointed) to chance across it in a village pub in Wiltshire. It's now available in quite a few places, although they are difficult to find.

I do love it, so when someone's made it, if you want some expert tasters...

It is quite common in the UK and available in a lot of shops. It is a Vienna Lager - a lot of Viennese brewers relocated to Mexico in the late 1800s and brought the style with them. The style is now more common in the Americas than it is in Austria.
Personally, I think it is one of the best mega-brewery beers around.
