Being a newbie don't know if I've done right thing here, mixing my malt ,sugar etc it started getting lumps in so used hand held electric whisk to get rid is this the done thing
 
Sounds like an approach to me. Probably best to sterilise anything that comes in contact with the beer at this stage.

Incidentally, the lumps won't make much difference in the long run anyway, even if you pitch with a couple of smaller ones still left, but they are aesthetically annoying.
