If you look at the slow motion replay you'll see a tube like object (i think a spring) hit him straight in the face at high velocity and after that there is no movement of his hands to steer out of the accident. I think whatever hit him did more damage than the crash itself. He has severe concussion and bruising to the left side of his face but more worrying was the damage to the bones in his skull which needed to be operated on. Word is the surgery went well, i hope he has a speedy recovery.

Yeah. The naturally superstitious Barrichello (understandably so after his compatriate Ayrton Senna died, then having a bit fall off his own car to hit Massa, another Brazilian, in the face less than a week after the horrendous freak accident which killed Surtees jnr) doesn't believe in coincidences. Ferrari seem 'positive' after the op but I'm concerned about the lack of information, no word on likely injury beyond severe concussion, perhaps the op was to relieve potential pressure? Anyway I never rated him as a driver but hope he gets well soon.

Video looks like he was out of it before he hit the wall, he applies both brakes and accelerator,

Reports are that the surgery is for skull damage, looking at this photo the helmet took a big brunt of the damage and his visor broke which caused the facial damage!!! the worrying thing is the size of his pupil!! hes now in the intensive care in Budapest. Just hope he has a speedy recovery.

Felipe Massa’s condition has improved enough for him to be brought out of sedation and taken off a ventilator, doctors at the AEK military hospital in Budapest reported on Monday evening.

Lajos Zsiros, the chief surgeon of Hungary’s defence forces, told a news conference that Massa was making continued progress and had been able to communicate with doctors and family members.

“His condition has improved significantly over the past 24 hours and he remains stable,” Reuters reported Zsiros as saying.

“We have ended sedation and took him off the respirator.

“He’s sleepy but has been able to reply to questions and has been able to move his limbs adequately.”

Thanks goodness for that :thumb:

Now he just sounds like he is how I feel on a Sunday at 6am

There is concern about damage to his left eye which could end his career (I wouldn't blame him if he didn't want to step into a F1 car again!!)

They have no idea how much damage is done until he opens the eye, his girlfriend is pregnant with their first child so he might have a good think about his future anyway. Those guys are made of 316 though and if his vision is ok i'd be very surprised if he's not back racing next year

Who's gonna team with kimi for the rest of the season? Niki Lauda has called the test team 'useless' haha.

My preference would be Schumacher however i can't see him been dumb enough to get into that car when there is nothing for him to gain from it. Of the test drivers i would have to go for Mark Gene over Luca Badoer. Ferrari say they're in no hurry to pick the sub but i would imagine the decision has been made already.

Michael Schumacher’s manager Willi Weber has poured cold water on mounting speculation that the seven-time world champion might return to the Formula 1 cockpit as a replacement for the injured Felipe Massa at Ferrari.

Schumacher’s official spokeswoman suggested on Tuesday morning that the legendary German would consider a stand-in role if called upon by Ferrari.

But after talks with Schumacher in Geneva on Monday, Weber said the 40-year-old German would not risk his reputation with an impromptu return in the unfamiliar F60 car.

“Whoever sits in the car at the next race in Valencia, it will not be Michael Schumacher,” Weber told the Daily Mail.

“I am not 100 per cent sure; I am 200 per cent sure.

I would have thought the sub was known before the crash, I mean these events aren't entirely unexpected in motorsport. I couldn't stand schumacher back. Just glad Legard doesn't harp on about him as much as Allen did.

I'll drive it, ...........how big are those seats?

Yes but there is a spanner in the works this time, if Renault remain suspended for the next race then Alonso will be free although i'm sure Renault might not like it!! Word is he'll be in a Ferrari next year anyway.
For the record, like him or not Schumacher was the best driver ever to drive a formula one car and probably the first of the present day super fit (body and mind) drivers. Not to mention his endless work to improve safety in F1, it's him the present/future drivers should look to emulate.

Felipe Massa has opened his left eye and can see with it, according to his personal doctor Dino Altmann – raising hopes that the Ferrari driver’s vision has not been permanently damaged and he will be able to race again.

Three days into his recovery after being hit on the helmet by a bouncing spring weighing almost a kilo that had broken free from Rubens Barrichello’s car in Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying, Massa is continuing to make encouraging progress in Budapest’s AEK hospital.

Altmann said that the 28-year-old Brazilian is now alert, speaking coherently in different languages and has been able to open and use his left eye, which was giving doctors cause for concern.

“His condition is improving quickly and constantly,” he said.

“He is more and more awake and reactive.

“He spoke to several people today, using three different languages, replying always in a coherent way.

Guess I should've clocked your avatar before saying anything,

Some say he's a great driver, some say he's the Stig, all I know is he crashes into Damon Hill on purpose at the 1994 Australia GP.

But hes back again!! Clicky
