Would it be better to just buy a ready built mash tun or building my own? And, what would I need if I built my own? So far, it's a bucket, heating element, tap and that's all I can think of.

mash tun doesn't have a heating element ( unless your doing Herms ) Its basically a very well insulated box you want ( like a thermopot or coolbox )

As PD says, a £20 coolbox from Amazon, a copper manifold and tap. Job done.

FYI Some perhaps all coldbox advertised volumes seem to be the volume including the lid for example my 32l coldbox tun when filled to 1cm under brim held just about 28l!! (to cater for the lid lip, otherwise it would displace liquid when closed)

if diy appeals thats a cheaper and more flexible option as u can select the components u want.

while insulation is the key to maintaining a stable temp over 90 mins, it can come in the form of a cardboard box to sit the tun in and a few sleeping bags or coats draped around and over ;)

I use, and have done for several years, a cooler type MT. I did a howto that was posted here in the howto section.
Not a lot to it, as long as you have the tools and a spare hour or so.

Keeps it to 0.5deg over 90min.
I use a 32L thermos 24Hr box. Good for up to about 8Kg of grain.
