Hello comrades,

Im just starting to work out my AG build. Got my boiler plan sorted and now I need to look at making a Mash tun. I doing 23 litre brews, so what size cool box should I be looking for? Also what kind of tap is best? I've seen metal ones in crew fix for a fiver http://www.screwfix.com/prods/17293/Plumbing/Brassware/Full-Bore-Lever-Ball-Valve-22mm Is this the sort of thing I should go for? :wha:

Also am I right in thinking I can get away without an HLT?

Any help much appriciated

Hi,

I have a combined HLT/Boiler, and I find it ok; a little bit of swapping stuff around, but ok.

My mashtun is a converted 24l cheapo jobbie (£7 from Home Bargains), converted with a lot of help from Muddydisco.

And yes, those taps are ideal; I still have isolating valves on mine, and have to use a screwdriver !

There are videos on youtube on how to do the hole (MD did mine, tbh!), it's straightforward enough, you just need patience, which I don't have !

I think there's even a thread on here for mashtun conversion. Extra insulation is a must, if you buy the cheaper coolbox - we used expanding foam, and I only lost 1 degree over 90mins in a freezing garage in February !

None of the pipework is soldered; just slightly crimped, so it stays together, but you can still take it apart to clean/ steralise :thumb:

Good Luck, mate !

and a little bit of skill which is also missing from my toolbox

Hello,

I am also in the process of building a AG setup. I am building an exact copy of this http://brewing.lustreking.com/gear/mashtun.html. My Dad is in the States so he procured all the parts for me except the cooler, I ordered that off of amazon.com. I am just waiting for parts to get here. Shipping takes about a month. But I can’t hardly wait. Good luck on your Mash Tun endeavors.

Hi,
I have recently gone through the costings of building the AG gear I need and for the mash tun or boiler tap it
made sense to me to buy this :
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Home-Brew-Ball-Va ... 35b01cd265
If you add up the cost of all the bits you need just for the tap, it'll come to more than the cost of the above and its
already built for you.
Just a thought.....
