Hi all,

Have bought an 'insulated' mash tun but would you recommend further insulation? If so, what sort of thing?

when i brought mine from ASDA i added extra insulation e.g. - bubblewrap and silver foil. But you can get away without adding extra. Just wrap a old sleeping bag or something like that around it.

Thought I'd do a little experiment. Have pre-heated 10L of water (amount used at mashing stage for my brew this week) and put it in the pre-heated tun for 90 minutes. I know it's a crude test and that the mash will hold its temperature better than plain water, but it's the best I can do at the moment! Temperature was 66.4c at 2:45pm. Will check on it at 4:15pm and see what the temperature is like. If it's much below 65c, I'll be getting my sleeping bag out of the loft ;)

I bet it will be a lot lower than 65c!

The other thing to remember is that a mash will not lose heat as rapidly as a mash tun full of water.

No need - when you actually mash it will have much more latent heat and will lose probably a degree over the 90 minutes.
