Hi, I'm new to the forum and jsut starting out with AG. I've made a couple of pales and one saison in very small batches. They were all 1 gallon. I started with 3lb malted grain in all cases and mashed in 5 quarts of water. I then sparged by lifting the moving the grain bag to another 3 quarts of water. This gave me 2 gallons of wort and then I boiled to just over 1 gallon.

I'm thinking of doing an imperial IPA and I'll be using 4.8lb and so I'll need 2 gallons jsut to mash in. I'm wondering how much sparge water I should use and how long I should boil for if I still want to get to my 1 gallon batch size? Thanks for the help.

honestly, it's gonna be difficult. i would really look into upping your batch size or a more tame recipe first. imperial ipa with tonnes of hops and malts is probably gonna result in disaster...
