Hi Ian, I did this many many moons ago - can't remember the exact details unfortunately but I seem to recall adding the zest of a lemon :wha:

I will move this post to the Wine making section because it is more in keeping with that than beer

I tried this once when I was a kid - but not an inexperienced brewer.
IMO, it's a waste of time, effort and sugar.
Everything about the "method" I was persuaded to try was unhygienic and the whole thing predictably just roted.
I suspect that this is one of those daft old country recipes that should be consigned to the scrap heap of history along with fermenting wines in an enamel bucket with the yeast spread onto a slice of toast.

Mine rotted and stunk the house out !
I've done beers in a bucket with yeast on bread :D wouldn't recommend it now but it did work in a fashion.

PMSL @ u lot - heres how to do it.

Get a marrow, a knitting needle, one of SWMBO's stockings, a large open top jar/jug, 1kg brown sugar.

Method -
Lop top off marrow and place to one side - wide side upwards

Use a large spoon and scoop out seeds as far down as you can
Use a kitchen knife and score the insides of the marrow - the fleshy bit
Fill the space with 500g of brown sugar or as much as you can get in it
Then pierce the bottom of the marrow about 6 inches deep with the knitting needle or something similar - dowel works too.
Then place said marrow in to wifeys stocking and invert over the jug/jar press down hard ish to seal it ish to the jar.
Put marrow lid back on and leave it alone for about a week or so until it stops dripping.
Then top back up and score flesh with knife and add rest of sugar then repeat above until stopped dripping.
Hey presto marrow rum - ish strain into a spare DJ and leave for about three months then strain again and bottle.
Now you could add yeast and ferment if you want or just lob in some dark rum to taste
Thats it - siiimples!!

and 8 times out of 10 it will still rot..... :D
however its always a good talking point when folks visit and see it........ and smell it. ;)

LOL yeah you have to keep an eye on them if they start going soft get rid.
You can also do this with honey melon too - i have done both and both came out fine but i added rum to both too so they were very strong and sweet. :thumb:
